Supporting the development of specialist practitioners within sport and physical activity, the two-year FdSc Applied Sports Conditioning and Exercise* programme aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of related theory, whilst evolving your skillset and real-world experience. Discover the science and theory associated with human anatomy, psychology, training and performance. Apply your knowledge and understanding in our unique sports setting and beyond. Preparing You To Be More Than A Graduate

Working with our team of industry and academic specialists, in conditioning and exercise, you will be immersed in the university environment at our University Centre WISE. Engaging in a hybrid-learning approach to your studies with both virtual and campus-based lectures; practical seminars and workshops, you will develop topic-focused knowledge, together with wider employability and industry-relevant skills, preparing you to be more than a Graduate. The Applied Sports Conditioning and Exercise programme is a two-year foundation degree (FdSc), comprising of 2 years (levels 4 and 5) and can be followed by the level 6 top up in Applied Sports Conditioning & Exercise (BSc Hons).  

Industry Focus

With an industry focus, the first year has been designed to provide the foundation for your knowledge and understanding, focusing on human function and movement; psychology; training principles for sports conditioning and exercise; nutrition; physiology and performance; how do multi-disciplines work together for overall performance? Application is the key upon progressing to the second year, developing further independent academic skills through research and practical skills in conditioning, exercise and rehabilitation, through a variety of taught and practical modules and continuing your professional practitioner journey.

Knowledge of Training: Principles of Sports Conditioning and Exercise

Setting the foundations for your sports conditioning, training and exercise journey, and future success within the industry, this module will develop your knowledge and understanding of fundamentals related to the client experience and principles for developing effective training programmes. Recognising the interdisciplinary approach to the industry, you will link the theory underpinning programme design and development with applied practice. You will also develop an understanding of components of fitness, including principles of training, programme design, implementation, monitoring and review. Your professional development starts here!

Fuel for Performance: An Introduction to Nutrition

Developing your knowledge of nutrition, you will consider its impact on everyday health, and in response to physical activity and sporting demands. Exploring the role of macronutrients and micronutrients, you will develop understanding of varying dietary requirements, with further consideration for fluid intake, relevant to a variety of scenarios. Additionally, you will study how nutrition can impact performance, e.g. pre-, inter- and post-exercise, together with supporting individuals to lead a healthy and nutritional lifestyle.

Potential in Action: Fundamentals of Physiology and Performance

The human body is a network of physiological, neurological and biological processes, which responds to the environment and demands placed upon it. Building on your anatomical understanding, you will explore the short-term and long-term responses to sport and physical activity, considering energy systems and the impact of fatigue and recovery. Enhancing your skills as a practitioner, you will apply your knowledge to create training programmes which are tailored and promote positive physiological adaptations to enhance performance. You will record and monitor specific physiological responses, taking into account ethics relating to personal data management and storage, and develop awareness of how the data can be interpreted to inform future planning.

Application of Training: Sports Conditioning, Exercise and Health

This module will continue to develop your communication and planning skills from Level 4, focusing on the participant experience throughout their individual journey including, the consultation process, motivation and programme adherence, utilising a variety of methods. Furthermore, you will engage with multiple practices to enhance training and programming, implementing testing and monitoring techniques, applying modifications where appropriate, relevant to participant goals and progression to-date, i.e., alternatives, progression and regressions, together with delivering session on a one-to-one and group basis, engaging with a variety of contemporary techniques, for example, individual, group and digital sessions.

Ready, Prepare Action: Physical Activity, Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation

Recognising the dynamic and multidisciplinary approach to sport and physical activity, this module aims to develop your understanding of injury and illness aetiology, together with the role and impact of prevention and rehabilitation. You will explore the principles underpinning injury prevention and how these apply to musculoskeletal conditions and sports performance. Furthermore, you will investigate and apply safe practices and methods to support injury and illness rehabilitation, demonstrating an analytical approach to both theory and practice.

Foundations of the Knowledge: Professional Practice

The Foundations of Knowledge module focuses on three key areas in the development of professional practice in sporting contexts: employability, academic skills and reflective practice. The module enables you to develop your academic skills as-well as enhancing your growth and development as you move through professional environments. You will develop your professional profile through C.V writing, self-analysis and goal setting as well as developing awareness of reflective practice and related theory which will allow you to develop your intrapersonal skills and reflect on your development over the year.

The Human Body: Explore the Fundamentals and Application of Anatomy

Understanding and drawing upon anatomical knowledge is important for professional?practitioners, enabling a holistic approach to coaching, teaching and instructing. Introducing and developing knowledge related to the structures and functions of the human body, the module will focus on the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. You will explore the complex nature related to how these systems work together, with application to fundamental movements and sports performance. This module provides the foundations in order for more complex topics to be discovered including, creative coaching; integration into Physical Education; sports conditioning; training and exercise.

Power of the Mind: Sport and Exercise Psychology

This module draws on the foundations of sport psychology and looks to explore how these theories can be best applied in context. Learning is, itself, a cognitive process and understanding our minds has a significant influence on our thoughts, feelings behaviours and therefore our performance. Psychological knowledge is important for professional practitioners, enabling a holistic approach to coaching, teaching and instructing. Individuals are in a unique position to apply their knowledge, together with educating others as to the amazing and complex processes of the mind. Students are encouraged to engage with the fundamentals of psychology, together with taking this knowledge to the broader context of the course and practical application.

Application of Knowledge: Professional Practice and Research

This module aims to link theory with practice further, developing the knowledge and understanding of research approaches, together with the impact of these on professional practice and application. Exploring an interest area, you will consider academic literature and research to-date, identifying and analysing the current landscape, additionally drawing upon the experiences and practices of industry professionals. Through lectures and independent study, you will explore the underpinning theory and concepts to research from both a natural and social science perspective, with greater consideration for data collection and analysis techniques. This module will result in a proposed direction for research in your chosen area, which may provide the platform for future investigation. Documenting your experiences throughout this module and engaging with an appropriate placement within the sector, you will further establish your credibility as a professional practitioner, with application informed by academic literature, research, continuing professional development (CPD) activities and applied practice.

Applied PRACademic Skills

In the Applied PRACademic Skills module you will continue to develop the application of theoretical concepts in a range of sporting contexts. The term pracademic refers to a practitioner that combines theoretical research with applied practice. The module encourages you to look innovatively through the lens of business owners, policy makers, curriculum designers or National Governing Bodies to create an intervention that will support the development of people in sporting contexts. This approach will be informed by a range of empirical evidence that is used to justify your approach to people development. Throughout the module you will have a significant amount of autonomy in the direction of your project, meaning you can shape it around areas of theoretical interest and your sporting expertise.

The Evolution of Lifelong Participation: An Exploration of Physical Literacy for Life

This module will introduce you to physical literacy, linking both theory and practice. Exploring the historical development of this concept, you will consider the theoretical perspectives of monism, phenomenology and existentialism, to appreciate the subjective and personal nature of individual experiences and the impact of the surrounding world. Considering the development of physical activity through health literacy, sport and exercise, you will consider how physical literacy can be fostered to support an individuals journey, from youth to adulthood, together with the role and impact of the professional practitioner in facilitating physical literacy. Appreciating the diverse nature of physical activity, health and well-being, you will additionally consider and develop strategies and opportunities to promote positive experiences and lifelong participation, including your own journey.

The Curious Practitioner: Applied Research

Developing innovative techniques and emerging as a professional practitioner in your field, this module will help you to explore and create practices which follow fundamental principles and codes of conduct, whilst building your understanding of specificity and uniqueness in programme design and delivery. You will develop safe and effective programmes, which will be bespoke to a diverse range of individuals, for example youth, academy athletes, general and specific populations, in which innovation and creativity will be the focus. Throughout the module, you will implement and demonstrate a variety of practices and tools to measure and monitor participant development, effectively analysing results over a period of time, adapting the programmes accordingly. You will additionally develop your delivery skills, with effective engagement and communication across a variety of platforms to deliver individual and group training, fitness and exercise sessions.

The 360 Practitioner: Applied Reflective Practice

This module continues the course theme of practice, theory and employability; affording you the opportunity to engage in a second work-based placement, explore theoretical concepts such as expertise and knowledge, and engage in reflective and critical thinking. Your continued engagement in personal and professional development will support the development of employability skills and help to create a pathway into a range of industries or postgraduate education.

Entry Requirements
56 UCAS points with GCSE or equivalent grade 4/C in English, Maths and Science. Mature students who do not meet the standard entry requirements will be considered on an individual basis upon application. International students are required a minimum score of ILETS 5.5.
