FdA Prosthetics, Modelmaking and Digital Design

The Conservation and Education Centre at the former Bristol Zoo Gardens site remains open to students.

You will have private access to the zoo grounds during lectures, to carry out your observations and data collection, but as more animals are moved, this will gradually be carried out at the Bristol Zoo Project. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Course Description

This exciting industry focused degree offers you a broad range of workshop techniques, practical skills and knowledge to prepare for entering employment within Prosthetics and Modelmaking roles across TV and Film, and the wider Creative Industries. Practical skills are developed across diverse project themes, with embedded research and contextual studies.

Designing prosthetic make-up looks, props and concepts for bringing your ideas into reality, the course relates to workshop roles, developing technical processes across physical and digital. Traditional crafts such as sculpting and moulding meet digital design and technological tools to create models, props and make-up creations related to Prosthetics and special effects techniques. The focus of design work within module projects uses a blend of both traditional and digital visual skills, as used currently within Prosthetics, Modelmaking and VFX industries. You will also develop the academic and research skills to enable you to keep abreast of new developments and apply to your projects and employment opportunities.  You may progress to the BA (Hons) Prosthetics, Modelmaking and Digital Design (top-up) degree, to gain your honours degree. Please note that you will be required to purchase your own kit prior to the start of your studies and further details are available on request.

Studying at University Centre WISE

You will have access to fully equipped workshop spaces and make-up studios at our University Centre WISE campus, alongside the Specialist Make-up Design degree students. This area has been specifically designed for degree students and provides professional facilities to work on projects. You may also access other facilities such as digital design studios, 3D workshops and design suites. Our University Centre WISE (UCWISE) campus provides the essential materials, tools and facilities for all modules. However you will be required to purchase a kit of personal tools and equipment to support your studies (costs and specifications will be shared with students before enrolment). You will have the ability to work competently within workshop environments to enhance your practical skills and develop further experience of current and emergent technologies within module projects; through tutor-guided development, individual and collaborative work.  In addition, there will be opportunities for you to engage with industry through work experience, guest speakers, and attendance at industry events.

Developing essential workshop-based prosthetics skills, you will engage in key techniques workshops to learn how to create flat mould prosthetics and other fundamental prosthetic skills such as face casting. You will use these essential techniques, and knowledge of products and tools developed, to create a prosthetics design, such as casualty effects, with flat moulded appliances. Working to the allocated brief, you will create and prepare relevant prosthetics. The module has an emphasis on the making of prosthetic appliances in a workshop setting.

You will develop product awareness and application techniques across current prosthetic formats, such as gelatine, silicone encapsulated, and foam latex pieces, and bald caps. You will engage in key techniques workshops to learn how to apply and remove pieces safely; and how to pigment and paint to match skin tones and other design colour choices. You will document your development of skills and knowledge, through to practical outcomes and final application of prosthetics through portfolio work. You will demonstrate your knowledge of industry workshop and on-set application practice while demonstrating practically your understanding of correct health and safety and professional practice in the studio. You will develop and evidence awareness of the importance of operational contexts of the workshop, and the importance of teamwork and autonomy, in the production of prosthetics and other special effects make-up.

You will work to your own negotiated themes, using skills and knowledge developed across the course. Advanced skills workshops will offer initial support to develop themes, with further independent work on your ideas to design, develop, test, and create final project outcomes. This will constitute a self-identified and negotiated project and you will be required to present your statement of intent / proposal. Working through your own project proposal as individual research, practice and debate, and through critical evaluation and with tutorial support of your progress, you will work towards final practical outcomes. It is anticipated that you will produce work using a wide range of relevant techniques to demonstrate industry suitable skills. Your portfolio of design processes leading to final practical work will document your project developments.
